Today, you will be writing a free response essay on The Great Gatsby. Click here for the prompt.
Today we will discuss the end of the novel, as well as the themes that Fitzgerald seems to be sharing through this work. How does this novel reflect the human experience on multiple levels - from personal to societal?
Click here for today's discussion questions. Response: Your assignment tonight is to reread the last three paragraphs of the novel. Spend some time trying to figure out what Fitzgerald (through Nick) is saying here. How do these paragraphs reinforce the themes discussed in class? Today, we will discuss Chapter 7. This is where things really start to... "heat up." Please click on this link to view the discussion questions for today.
Also, we NEED TO UPDATE OUR GATSBY ORGANIZER. After the discussion, think about and respond to the following as a comment to this post: 1. The Buchanans' unlimited wealth has left their lives empty and boring. Because of this, what does Gatsby represent to Daisy? How does she really feel about him? Explain. 2. At the end of this scene, Gatsby remains outside, looking up at the light in Daisy's room, while Daisy and Tom are speaking together in the kitchen. How is this scene a microcosm of the larger situation? The assigned text for today was chapters 5-6. I am out sick, but please use the google doc linked here to guide your group discussion today. As you go, you can collaboratively fill in the document (just one answer for the group, taking turns being the scribe). At the end of class, you should have one completed document for the entire group. NO NEED TO MAKE A COPY, just fill it out and it will save automatically.
When you have finished, please write a paragraph as a comment to this post discussing the following quote in relation to the text: "Money can't buy happiness." Today's discussion is based on chapters 2 & 3. Please open this google doc and follow along.
Also, let's continue to update our graphic organizer for Gatsby. You should read chapter 4 for tomorrow's class. I will not be here (I will be in Slana), but you can run the discussion yourselves by filling out this google doc. Because I won't be able to join you, please fill out the entire document as completely as possible, and update the Gatsby organizer as well. Then, read chapters 5 and 6 for Monday. Homework Response: Chapters 2/3 - The beginning of chapter two introduces one of the most significant symbols in the text. Identify and describe this symbol, and explain its meaning and significance. Task:
Today we will discuss the first chapter of The Great Gatsby. Please open this Google Doc which will guide our discussion today. After our initial discussion, we will begin a log of information about Gatsby himself. Open the Gatsby Character Chart to add information and ask questions you have about the character. Response: Your response today is regarding Daisy's comment right after the birth of her daughter. Do you agree with Daisy? Why or why not? Wow... testing took an entire week from us! I am guessing that all of you finished Of Mice and Men since we last met. Please take a few minutes and think about Steinbeck's message. What observation was he making of humanity? What can we talk away from this text with?
Friday's Task: Write a paragraph in which you identify, support, and explain a central theme from this text. Monday - Today we will wrap up Of Mice and Men. Let's read the following poem by Robert Burns. Tonight, we will start The Great Gatsby. Pay close attention as you read for symbols... As we continue to analyze Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, we will do so by working collaboratively on a google doc. I have allowed each of you access to edit this document, so we will divide up the questions and each of you will be responsible for leading a discussion of your questions. As you answer the initial question, try to think of follow-up questions that may lead your classmates to a deeper understanding.
Click here to go to the google doc. Response Assignment: Based on what you have read in the first two chapters, what is at least one theme that you think is being developed? Explain. Homework: Tonight, your homework is to read chapter three, which goes all the way up to page 62. As you read, please pay attention to the development of characters, the emergence of conflict, foreshadowing, and symbols. Most importantly, start looking for the themes that are developing in the story. We will discuss this chapter at length tomorrow. |
